STORYBOARDS
CHARACTERS
HERO BOY
is our introverted main character - shy, reserved, careful with his words. But he has a dark secret - whoever he has a crush on, he LITERALLY sticks to them! He has a magnetic heart so powerful, it can attract any person. His experience with a girl and a boy will test the boundaries of his powers.
HERO GIRL
is cute, sassy, opinionated, with full lips and has her signature buns for hair. When she discovers Hero Boy’s magnetic powers, she desperately tries to resist its pull - and it’s affects on her well-maintained looks!
OTHER BOY
is the definition of a model student - tall, handsome, bespectacled, and well put together. Stoic almost to a fault, it seems nothing will crack his hard-edged, but quiet persona. Nothing…at least until Hero Boy’s heart pines for him and the Hero Girl! It will take everything in Other Boy’s power to have anyone get in the way of breaking him.
Head turn/look development test of Other Boy. He was animated and colored in Clip Studio by Matt Wiens, while I handled the compositing in After Effects.
LOCATIONS
Backgrounds in this film are very important, in large part because the story takes place inside Bishop McNamara High School, my alma mater. Great care was taken in getting all of the details right for this film, from the look of the lockers to the marble floors.
LAYOUTS
Because I was working with a team of animators with varying skill levels, it was important that I create layouts for them to make sure the acting and timing are clear, as well as keeping the characters on model.
LOOK OF PICTURE
The visual inspiration for MAGNET comes from a variety of talented artists, including KEVIN DART, JASMIN LAI and EASTWOOD WONG, whose strengths lie in sharp, graphic shapes, as well as sophisticated color and lighting choices.
The color script for "MAGNET" shows each important moment in this film, suggesting lighting and color choices that advance the story.
This was the first shot that was put into production, and was the first to be complete. This helped set how the film would look in motion, fully composited.
This is a shot that I composited using animation and a background painting from my fellow teammates.
